How do we do this? In order to scale coral restoration to the size needed to actually SAVE coral reefs, the planet as a whole must incorporate community members into coral reef restoration measures. Why? Because the cost of current coral restoration methods currently supersedes the local communities’ budget to save coral reefs. The effort, cost, and time required to solely use scientists to save the planet’s coral reefs means that the cost to save a single coral in some circumstances and locations could be as much as $3,000.00.

The Coral Conservancy believes that because coral reefs are a public resource, the communities which rely on them should be allowed to take part in its recovery. The Coral Conservancy also recognizes that future generations hold the key to the future of coral reefs. By providing them with experience and training in the field of coral restoration, we hope they will go on to be future leaders in the charge to preserve and recover coral reefs. And all members of a community who want to contribute to coral conservation and recovery, irrespective of their age, should have that opportunity.

Our approach utilizes proven science in combination with real-world, practical methods developed for community coral restoration methods. In places such as Palau, Fiji, Kiribati, French Polynesia, Belize, Bali, Haiti, and Florida, to name a few, community-based coral restoration has been field-tested for numerous years. Coral restoration in these regions is conducted directly by the community members where the coral reefs are part of their livelihood. Now, with the research and scientific developments produced in these areas, the Coral Conservancy plans to combine these community-based coral restoration efforts with modern techniques developed by regional scientists to super charge coral growth.

The Coral Conservancy’s goal is to authorize coral restoration for communities by applying for “Umbrella/blanket permits” which allows our trained coral restoration volunteers like you, to conduct coral restoration on behalf of The Coral Conservancy. We will act as a platform and liaison to coral reef communities and the State government to facilitate the permitting process required to conduct coral restoration… legally!

If you want to plant corals with The Coral Conservancy, please follow the instructions on the Volunteer To Plant Coral Here link. The Coral Conservancy will begin offering training in community-based coral restoration methods. Additionally, The Coral Conservancy solicits donations to apply for, and maintain the complex permits which allow you to plant corals on our behalf. We are currently in process to begin a coral restoration project on East Oahu. If you would like to learn more on how to get involved with this project, please email Damienberi@thecoralconservancy.org.
